You are stuck on a chairlift so you call……CNN?

What has changed in our society that getting your name or face on TV so important?

So a chair lift derails in Maine over the holidays. The resort does a good job of issuing a press release. However, someone sitting on the chair lift calls CNN?

How many people carry CNN’s number on their phone?
A man on the chairlift who called into CNN estimated that 100 people were stranded on the lift around noontime. He said skiers were told by mountain employees that trapped skiers would have to belay down from chairs via rope.
At least CNN or the man calling got the facts wrong!

See 5 chairs fall as ski lift derails at Sugarloaf ski resort in Maine; people reportedly injured.

Remember that Lost Resorts Poster on the walls of your favorite hang out? It’s Back and Updated

Colorado Ski Country USA Gives 137 Lost Ski Resorts A Place in History

Ski-industry history buffs rejoice! Colorado's Lost Resorts are found with redesigned and updated iconic poster http://bit.ly/e0UVzU

DENVER, Colo. – December 28, 2010 –Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) announced today that the iconic Colorado’s Lost Resorts poster is being released in a second edition. The poster commemorating Colorado’s ski history is newly updated, redesigned and now available for purchase. The Lost Resorts poster accounts for 169 Colorado ski areas including nearly 140 areas that were once in operation but have now ceased to exist, citing their location on a state map and giving a brief description of the resorts’ existence. In addition to lost resorts, the poster shows the location of resorts currently in business as well as town areas still operating.

From resorts with three lifts to ski hills with only a rope tow, the poster documents the rise and fall of some of Colorado’s most storied ski areas. Underneath a state map which pinpoints each resort is a list of the 20 Most Memorable resorts and a few notes about each one. The remaining resorts are presented in chapters defined as Recently Lost, Long Ago and Long Long  Ago and are also designated by location on the map.

Ski-history facts and trivia adorn the poster’s border and are sure to delight ski-industry history buffs everywhere. For example, $10: price of a season pass to Climax in 1936, 3: number of feet off the ground of the state’s first chairlift, 70: percentage of terrain rated “most difficult” at Hidden Valley.

This is the second edition of the legendary poster. The original Lost Resorts poster was created in 1999 by Colorado Ski Country USA with input from ski historians. In similar collaboration, some notable discoveries have been accounted for on this second edition. Updates include finding one lost resort, the opening of a new resort and two resorts joining the lost.

“We thought it was important to continue telling the story of our state’s ski history since it is such an integral part of Colorado’s culture,” explains Melanie Mills, president and CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA. “The Lost Resorts poster captures the narrative of the ski industry in a way that gives lasting tribute to ski areas that are now a part of the past.”

Colorado Avalanche Information Center is emailing reports!

As CAIC says: If there is enough snow to ride, there is enough snow to slide.

If you are not a member of the CAIC and not receiving Avalanche reports from the CAIC you should never venture outside the boundaries of any ski area. (You should probably never venture outside the Front Range!)

Membership in the CAIC for a year is cheap! Figure out what your life is worth and send them a percentage of that value. While you are at the website, sign up for the CAIC newsletter.

Here is an example of the information the CAIC provides:
There are a few ingredients necessary for an avalanche. The first is a slope steep enough to slide. Most avalanches start on slopes steeper than 30 degrees, in the range of black diamond ski runs. Slopes that steep are often the first to fill in as snow drifts into gullies and below ridges. Permanent snowfields are usually sufficiently steep, too.
The next ingredient is a layer of strong over weak snow. This is relative strength, so the strong snow can appear quite soft. It just needs to bond together more than underlying snow. One of the best mechanisms for making strong snow is drifting from wind. The areas with snow deep enough to ride are most likely drifted and have the greatest potential for strong over weak layering.

Weak snow is easy to find in the early season. Thin, shallow snow facets rapidly. Faceted snow consists of big sugary grains that are poorly bonded. You can find the biggest, weakest facets are nearest the ground.
Permanent snowfields, at first glance, have weak over strong layering. They are not avalanche immune because a thin layer of very weak snow tends to form at the base of the recent snow. The old, strong snow is often icy and slick, a perfect surface for fast-running avalanches. The icy old snow makes it hard for a rider tumbling in an avalanche to self-arrest or slow down, and high-speed falls result.

The final ingredient is a trigger to break the weaker snow. A rider makes a very good trigger, overloading the weak snow and causing an avalanche. The stronger slab fractures and flows downhill around the rider. Early season avalanches tend to be small, but tumble a rider over rocks and stumps and cause lots of injuries.
We need to brush up on our avalanche skills as part of our pre-season training. Flip through your favorite avalanche books, or check out some of the online tutorials. Beacon practice is a great way to pass a gray afternoon. Your avalanche gear deserves the same attention you lavish on your skis, board, or sled.

Seriously, sign up, give them some money, take a course, and buy a beacon, shovel and probe and ski so you never have to use any of them!

Outdoor Recreation Caucus created in the US Senate.

A Caucus is a sub-group of Senators (or representatives in the house) who are interested in a specific issue the caucus is created to monitor.

U.S. Senator Mark Udall (CO) and Senator James Risch (ID) created the Senate Outdoor Recreation Caucus. The purpose is to provide an interest or to some extent, a clearing house to bring important to the issues the caucus has been created around.

In this case, the two senators want to show support and continued interest in the federal and possibly state issues of outdoor recreation.

Please thank Senator Mark Udall and Senator James Risch for their efforts.
