Pre-Season Ski & Snowboard Checklist

Pre-Season Checklist:
Equipment -
When's the last time you had your skis/snowboard tuned? If the answer is "I can't remember" then it's time to get your equipment in for a tune. A general rule of thumb: if you've ridden five times on your boards, it's time for a tune-up.  Plus, an expert wax and sharpening makes skis/snowboards last longer and provide more control for turns and stopping.
Gloves/Mittens -
If your hands are blocks of ice, you're not going to enjoy any winter activity and your dexterity and performance is also affected.  So, make sure the whole family has a pair that fits properly.
Jackets/Pants
Does your jacket still fit?  Have your kids outgrown their outerwear?  Are they up to the demands of winter activities?  Some kids jackets and pants have hems that can be let out to get one more year of wear.  However, if you/your kids are heading out on the slopes in varying weather conditions, it's worth it to invest in well-made, quality outerwear.
Travel/Pass/Lesson Discounts
Fall is the time to take advantage of discounts on travel packages, lessons and lift tickets/passes.  Check with your local resort and retailer or a destination resort you've been planning to visit to see if they're offering any "early bird specials".
Helmet -
Do you have one - does your kid need the next size up? For all ages of skiers/snowboarder, helmets are becoming the norm on the slopes. Not only do they protect against head injuries, but also provide warmth since up to 60% of your body's heat can escape from an uncovered head.
Goggles -
If you can't see where you're headed on a mountain, you're in big trouble. It's amazing how much fun you can have on a mountain when glare, snow and flat light aren't holding you back so make sure your goggles still fit properly. Check to make sure your goggles still fit and didn't suffer too many scratches last season.

What is better than a blue bird pow day in Colorado?

Is there any thing better than a blue bird powder day in Colorado? I think not! if you ever have the chance to go and shred a pow day in Colorado with a blue bird sky you should definitely go out there and give it a shot. When you wake up in the morning when it just dumped in Colorado you see the mountains pop up over the mountains and you can see your breath it is so cold. When the sky has no clouds in it and the sun is just bright and you can see every thing you don't half to guess where all the unmarked obstacles. When one thing that helps on a bluebird day is to wear no face mask and get a narly goggle tan. This will make you look like you have been getting down skiing. It is one of the best feelings in the world to just rip threw some deep powder that just flows over you and all you can do is laugh and have the best time of your life. Even if you fall so hard that you think you will get hurt but it is just fun and it feels like you are falling in a pillow. Then when you get up out of the deep powder you just look up to see what happened and a huge smile just breaks on to your face and you just laugh. Or when you hit a jump and then you land the powder just explodes around you and you just have that awesome feeling of just popping out of that powder and just keep riding. But when that powder is gone it is a sad sight but don't you worry if we all pray to the snow gods and maybe burn some old skis for the Uller God so we can get some more fresh powder.
But even when there is no sun out and it is dumping that is also a wonderful feeling it is like magic when you see all those snow flakes falling every where and it is starting to pile up the powder. It is truly magical when it snows to me it is one of the best thing that i can see when i walk out my door. And when you are in the backcountry it is so quite and so peaceful that it is the best thing in the world all the  trees collect snow and it makes the best scene ever. But if you go to Colorado Mountain College, And if you live here you will see all the snow and scenes of the mountains that you will remember forever. You walk out your door and all the snow is pilled up on your car and you have to wipe off all the snow. And you just turn your defrost on all the way and drink your hot coffee while you drive to the mountain and just ready to go shred. If you have never skied Colorado champagne powder you better get out here because it is the best thing ever and like warren miller says " if you don't do it this year you will be one year older when you do".

I won’t tell you how to run your life, you don’t tell me how to run my ski area!

An article Should Ski Areas Expand When Skier Numbers Are Flat? Raises some interesting questions. However I’m not sure those are questions the public should be asking.
The Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition is saying that ski areas should not be expanding their terrain when the number of skiers is not growing. Basically the Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition is grading ski areas on their environmental footprint and expansion is a negative aspect of their score card. They are then tying its grade to the lack of growth in the number of skiers coming to resorts.
Resorts who receive a good grade are happy with it and resorts who receive a bad grade found fault with the grading system. I had the same response all throughout my formal education.
Grading anyone on its sustainability, its environmental concerns are great. I try and check those issues when I deal or make a purchase from some companies. However tying it into an economic issue, when most resorts are making money is a little lame.
This is different from the National Ski Area Association’s Sustainable Slopes Program which grades ski areas on their environmental score card.

Colorado Avalanche Information Center

Hello-

Starting this season, we will no longer require a donation to receive forecasts via email. From now on you can get all of our mountain weather and avalanche products on the web, phone line via Twitter, or email for free. We have wanted to make this change for quite some time. It is a financial gamble for us, but we feel it is the right thing to do. Avalanche safety information should be free and readily available to everyone that needs it.

This change, and all the new features for the 2011-2012 season will move to our live website next week. This is later than we would like, but testing the features has taken longer than we expect. As a result, many of you received a renewal notice this week. I am sorry that this message went out and for the confusion it caused. We have extended everyone’s subscriptions, so you will keep getting the emails you were signed up for last season. By Thanksgiving everyone will be able to sign up for a free account so they can send us observations and get forecasts via email.

We still need your financial support. Although our funding appears to be stable, these are hard times for everyone and no one knows the future of any government program. Backcountry use in our state increases every year and we are constantly trying to provide a better service. Please support the Friends of the CAIC through one of their events, make a donation through their website or donate directly to the CAIC through the Geological Survey's website. You can always send comments, suggestions and donations to:

CAIC

Boulder, CO 80305

Thank you for all of your support in the past and I hope the services we provide continue to deserve your support now and in the future.

Risk Management & Colorado Mountain College

To fully understand Risk Management one must first understand what risk is. When asked what risk is, plenty of possible answers arise. Loss of money or time, injury to person or property and negative feelings are all possible results of enduring risks. Risk evaluation is also an important factor in understanding risks. First one must determine their level of acceptability of the risk. Identifying the risk and the possible frequency of the risk can help provide options of how to handle the task at hand. One must also determine the severity of the risk at hand. Sometimes people look at something the wrong way and assume that it may be or cause a risk when in all reality it is just their perception. Sometimes taking risks can even provide a reward but it may come as a downfall as well.

PSIA-AASI Releases E-Learning Module for Entry Level Instructors

In an effort to expand resources for those looking to become snowsports instructors, the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI) has launched the Entry Level Instructor’s Guide. This new e-learning tool details in easy-to-understand language what to expect in becoming a professional snowsports instructor.
The Entry Level Instructor’s Guide is the first in a series of online e-courses produced by PSIA-AASI that introduces the basics of teaching snowsports, PSIA-AASI as an organization, and PSIA-AASI models and concepts to prospective instructors or newly hired instructors. Each course integrates on-snow video content of snowsports classes in action, as well as downloadable attachments and links for additional research and learning.
“We’re always excited when we launch a new education product, and this one is at the start of a whole new range.” said Earl Saline, PSIA-AASI Professional Development Manager. “As technology has evolved, we are looking at how PSIA-AASI can evolve it’s delivery of education content and we’re excited to improve our online resources with the addition of these e-courses.”
The Entry Level Instructor’s Guide is a 14-minute online course that guides the viewer through a slide show providing an overview of what to expect as a new instructor. With voice-over and video content included, the course is an interactive experience that extends well beyond simply reading text on a screen. This free resource is available to anyone interested in learning more about snowsports instruction through the PSIA-AASI website, TheSnowPros.org.
“Our extension into e-learning came from a desire to provide valuable information for new instructors in a whole new way,” says Saline. “Rather than replace instructor training that a school might provide, the Entry Level Instructor’s Guide is meant to compliment that training for new staff. This piece was developed with members, trainers, and school director input, whose combination of knowledge and experience allowed us to create a great introduction to teaching snowsports that will translate regardless of where an instructor might be working or volunteering.”

Leitner-Poma will be building the new WiFi enabled Gondola at Vail

Good job Tom!
Leitner-Poma just announced it got the contract to build the new gondola at the Vail Ski area. See Leitner-Poma to build the state-of-the-art gondola in Vail to read the announcement. See Vail installing new Gondolas for the 50th Anniversary with WiFi for more information about the Gondola and Vail’s decision to put the new lift in.
Heated seats, Kenwood radio and Wi-Fi will be in each gondola cabin. Where else but Vail would this even be considered! “Like nothing on earth” will take on a new meaning.
The gondola will be ready for the 2012-2013 ski season which will also be Vail’s 50th anniversary.
