Woman who went around barricades to sit and read a book awarded $300,000.

Substantially, less than the $7.6 million she had requested for being partially paralyzed.

Mt. Baker ski area was sued for $7.6 million dollars by a 66 year old woman who was paralyzed when snow falling off a roof fell on her. She was sitting on a deck reading a book. To get to the spot where she was injured, she had gone around barricades set up because of the risk of the falling snow.

She sued for her injuries, and the jury returned a verdict finding that she was 85% to blame for her injuries. Consequently, the award was reduced by 85%.

It is very sad that the woman is a paraplegic. Her medical costs for the rest of her life will be horrific. However, she can read. She was reading a book and ignoring a sign to read a book is stupid.

See Negligence lawsuit against Mt. Baker ski Area goes to jury and Jury renders verdict in Mt. Baker lawsuit.

PSIA-AASI Welcomes New Staff Members

August 30, 2010 – Lakewood, Colo. – Preparations for the 2010–11 snowsports season are in full swing at the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI), as evidenced by the recent hiring of four staffers to fill positions in the membership services, communications, and marketing departments.

Sara Nakon joins the staff as membership services director, Kyle Hamley as membership services coordinator, Tim Johnson as assistant editor, and Erin Tulley as marketing coordinator.
Nakon comes to PSIA-AASI with significant experience in association management, gained through positions with the Association Management Center in Glenview, Illinois, and Denver’s Competency & Credentialing Institute. A graduate of Miami University of Ohio with a degree in Business Management, she also has considerable knowledge of association management software systems. Nakon enjoys spending time outdoors and is a new skier. She looks forward to also learning to snowboard.

Hamley is a Houston, Texas, native who learned to ski on family trips to Colorado. A graduate of the University of Texas (with a degree in Radio/Television/Film and History), Hamley learned the nuances of non-profit organizations during time spent working for the Austin Film Society and volunteering for the Denver Film Society. As a skier and snowboarder, she is stoked for the opportunity to interact with fellow snowsport enthusiasts in her position as membership services coordinator.

Johnson, a native of Casselton, North Dakota, brings to his new position many years of editorial and association experience, along with knowledge of the snowsports industry. A University of North Dakota graduate in Journalism, he has held senior editing positions at AAA Colorado and the Financial Planning Association, as well as at VeloNews and Cross Country Skier magazines. In addition, he served as a volunteer ski patroller at Colorado’s now-defunct Hidden Valley Ski Area. Johnson enjoys alpine and cross-country skiing, cycling, hiking, and fly fishing.

Tulley hails from Farmington, New Mexico, and relocated to Denver after earning a degree in Communications: Public Relations from Indiana’s Purdue University and working in Indianapolis. Before joining the staff at PSIA-AASI, Tulley worked in publishing for a parenting magazine and served as a communication assistant for the Purdue Sports Information Department. A skier since the age of four, she is excited to be back out West and looks forward to immersing herself in the snowsports industry.

Ten Year Trends in Snowsports Participation

WHAT’S THE TREND? TEN YEARS OF SALES AND PARTICIPATION

Perspective is the reason we analyze trends, to make sure that our view of the season is balanced and not a product of emotional reaction to the current economic situation. Last season, consumers purchased 1,128,804 total downhill sliding devices (alpine skis and snowboards); 595,563 pairs of alpine skis and 533,151 snowboards. That total was above the average totals for the 1999/2000 – 2009/2010 seasons.
Sliding device sales last peaked in 1999/2000 as the rush to buy shaped skis was tapering and the rush to buy snowboards was truly ramping up. The chart on sales of sliding devices shown below confirms that snowboarding pushed sales over 1 million total sliding devices and supported an increase in participation of about 1 million persons.

Further examination into the participation data reveals that many choose snowboarding rather than skiing but would certainly choose one or the other sport. Additionally, many choose to participate in both. In fact, 26% of snowboarders also participate in alpine skiing, and 18% of alpine skiers also participate in snowboarding.

For more trends and data on participation and sales get your copy of the 2010 Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report scheduled for release the second week of September. The Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report is the most comprehensive report on snow sports sales, participation and overall trends available in the snow sports market. This report gives you an unprecedented quantitative review of the most recent snow sports season from detailed retail data in every product category including alpine ski, snowboard, telemark ski, cross country ski, backcountry ski, snowshoe, apparel, and accessories as well as U.S. participation in each snow sports discipline. The Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report is an invaluable resource for anyone building a business plan, formulating a sales strategy, designing a marketing campaign, negotiating credit, developing a budget or just trying to learn about the snow sports business. For more information regarding the Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report or about other SIA Research products and services please contact SIA’s Research Director, Kelly Davis at KDavis@snowsports.org, 703.506.4224.
